Dr Jack Cush reviews the news, journal articles and takes a few Back Talk questions this week:

  1. Metanalysis of 11 RCTs (1353 patients) shows that saline injections are as effective as corticosteroids, platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid for hip osteoarthritis pain
  2. Finish DBRPCT study of 146 adults w/ arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) for med meniscal tear shows no clinical benefit after 5 years; but those with APM had slight, nonsignificant increase in Xray knee
  3. Cell phone use and location data during the COVID pandemic shows greater reductions in cell phone activity in the workplace and retail locations, and greater increases in activity at the residence, are associated with  lesser growth in COVID-19 cases
  4. Another metanalysis of Chloroquine, HCQ, or azithromycin in COVID-19 shows HCQ not associated w/ reduced mortality (RR=0.83; 0.65-1.06) in hospitalized COVID-19, but combo of HCQ & azithromycin significantly increased mortality (RR=1.27; 1.04-1.54)
  5. Sanofi suspended Kevzara (sarilumab; 200 or 400 mg) studies in severe hospitalized COVID-19 infx - phase 3 trials didnt meet primary or secondary endpoints vs PBO. 420-Pt multinational trial had similar SAE and death rates in all 3 arms
  6. Comparative retrospective study of 251 ANCA+ pts with AAV (MPA or GPA) & severe renal Dz induction Rx with CYC or RTX, +/- PLEX. Remission equally achieved by CTX or RTX; addition of PLEX did not change outcomes. Predictors ESKD and death - eGFR <15cc/min
  7. Falls are common after total hip arthroplasty - Cohort of 108 individuals (age of 72.4 yrs) w/ total hip arthroplasty followed 12 mos. 23% had a FALL; half (56%) w/in 6–12 mos of surgery.
